Future Unearthed: from fragment to form
A shard carries more than the traces of a broken object. It tells us about the place its material came from, the hands that shaped it and the life it was part of. For EX SITU – Matter in Translation, we are working with deaccessioned archaeological ceramics from South Holland. What was once everyday becomes the starting point for a new perspective on heritage.
During Dutch Design Week, we will present Future Unearthed: an initial study of the material and a series of melting tests. We explore how the fragments behave under heat, revealing colours, textures and possibilities for new work.
This first exploration leads into the research and design process that follows. Lotte will translate the material into clay recipes and new forms, inspired by historical objects in which form and use were closely connected. Stories of origins and making become part of the designs, inviting us to look beyond the object itself.
The broader research and the resulting designs will be shown from 5 February to 7 March 2027 in EX SITU – Matter in Translation at SeeLab in Scheveningen, The Hague.
