Hand-painted Fenix plate and bowl made with recycled ceramic waste

For Rotterdam’s newest museum, Fenix, we created a commissioned series of plates and bowls for the museum store. Specially for Fenix, we developed a clay body with subtle light speckles made from ceramic waste collected from Dutch households.

The hand-painted plate includes a quote by the philosopher Erasmus. The bowls are made from the same clay and finished with a light blue transparent glaze, with a handwritten quote on the outside. Each plate and bowl is unique and closely connected to the theme of Fenix. The pieces are available from the museum shop in Rotterdam.

Throughout the making process, we explored different writing styles, sizes, colours and material recipes to find the right balance between clay and glaze. The glaze subtly enriches the bowl while preserving the natural character of the clay. The handwritten text is applied with a ceramic pencil, giving each piece its own character while keeping the plates and bowls visually connected.
